The film’s breezy nature and charm mask two major flaws in its premise. Carroll absentmindedly remarks to the new fiancée and her mother: “Delightful, charming woman…it’s amazing how he let her slip away from him.” After talking sweetly about Sharon in front of her father, Joanna Barnes’ character confides to her mother: “First change I make in that household is off she goes to a boarding school in Switzerland.” As a whimsical priest charmed by Maureen O’Hara’s ex-wife, Leo G. Carroll, who each deliver some of the film’s best lines. Still, they’re almost upstaged by supporting players Joanna Barnes and Leo G. Brian Keith unselfishly plays straight man while Hayley and Maureen O’Hara get most of the funny scenes. It’s a simple framework that allows the winning performances and sharply written script to shine. Their scheme encounters a major obstacle, however, when Sharon learns that Dad plans to marry a young, gold-digging socialite (Joanna Barnes). Determined to reunite their mother (Maureen O’Hara) and father (Brian Keith), the girls trade places. And then he turned up and we realized he wasn’t dead at all.The story begins at Camp Inch with 13-years-olds Susan Evers and Sharon McKendrick discovering they’re twins separated at an early age when their parents divorced. And she was so unhappy and ashamed about that fact that she pretended that her father had actually died.
When I went to my boarding school, there was one girl whose parents were divorced. It wasn’t easy to get a divorce before that. When it came out, divorce was just starting to be available. It was about children taking charge of trying to sort out the terrible mess that the grown-ups made. It was an extremely good script and it was about something important. It was a very well-made film and a cast with wonderful actors. But I love my little Oscar.ĪP: Does it surprise you how much people still love “The Parent Trap”? So Jodie Foster, Tatum O’Neal, they got the full monty. And from then on, they gave any child actor a full-sized Oscar. And after they gave it to me, they got rid of the whole thing.
